Four in a row for Wymeswold

Vice Captain Paul Brain hit a half century to help his Wymeswold side to a fourth consecutive win in Division D of the South Notts Cricket League, this time at home to Newark R & M.

Brain won the toss and chose to bat first, with opener Dan Barry’s 35 the pick of the top-order batsmen as the Wold reached 65 for 4. Paul Brain (51) and Charlie Raynes (45) then shared a stand of 72 before a late flurry from Pete Shaw (25) and Jack Shelton (16no) pushed the total to 218 for 9 from 45 overs.

In reply the visitors were well placed at 165 for 2, but then three wickets from Luke Scoble, backed up by two apiece for Dan Barry and Toby Smith, swung the game back to the home side. In the end Newark ended on 204 for 7 from 45 overs, sealing a 14-run win for Wymeswold.

Meanwhile in Division L of the league Wymeswold’s second team lost out by 47 runs at West Bridgfordians 4ths.

The home side batted first and made 152 for 5, with 14-year-old Joe Wells taking a wicket on his senior debut.

In reply, Wymeswold turned a useful 31 for 1 into 39 for 7. Only Callum Purcell (13), Andy Matthews (27) and Sam Tyler (19) were able to add respectability to the score as the seconds were bowled out for 105 in the 30th over.
